Would have traded 175-run knock for Indian win: Sachin Tendulkar

Senior batsman Sachin Tendulkar says he would have "gladly traded" his knock of 175 against Australia in 2009 for an Indian victory even though he "certainly" rates it as one of the very best in his glorious ODI career. Chasing 351 runs in the fifth of the seven-match ODI series at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, Tendulkar fell awfully close to pulling off an unlikely win with an incredible innings.
"It was certainly one of my best innings, but I would have gladly traded those 175 runs for a victory," Tendulkar said about the match which India lost by three runs. He scored those runs off 141 balls and smashed 19 fours and four sixes. Tendulkar completed 17,000 runs in ODIs during the course of that innings.
"It was one of those days when nothing seemed to be out of place. I was able to execute my strokes well. Our middle order failed, but Suresh Raina batted fluently. We had a good partnership of 137. Suresh was caught behind at 299 in the 43rd over. Harbhajan Singh fell soon after, to make it 300 for 6, but I believed we were very much in control. It was a question of hanging in there, running well and ensuring that bad balls were dealt with harshly," he said.

Chelsea set up FA Cup quarter-final vs Manchester United

Rafa Benitez watched his Chelsea side beat Middlesbrough 2-0 in the FA Cup fifth round on Wednesday and then announced he would leave at the end of the season, delivering an emotional outburst that included a swipe at the club's fans and hierarchy.
As with most games in his turbulent reign that began in November, Benitez was barracked by a section of supporters at Riverside Stadium. An unconvincing win was sealed by goals from Ramires and Victor Moses in the second half, setting up an eye-catching quarter-final against Manchester United at Old Trafford on March 10.
A defiant Benitez wasn't in any mood to celebrate after the match, however. "They should concentrate on supporting the team," Benitez said of the club's fans. "In the end, they are not making any favors to the club, to the rest of the fans and the players.

Real Madrid beat Rayo 2-0 in Mourinho's 100th La Liga game

Real Madrid had little trouble hanging on to beat cross-town rival Rayo Vallecano 2-0 despite Sergio Ramos' early sending off, giving coach Jose Mourinho a victory in his 100th Spanish league game on Sunday.
Young striker Alvaro Morata put Madrid ahead in just the third minute. Ramos doubled the advantage with a header in the 12th, but the Spain defender then left the hosts with 10 men in the 18th after picking up two bookings in a two-minute span.
Madrid's win kept them in third place, four points behind Atletico Madrid after it won 3-0 at Valladolid. Barcelona lead Atletico by 12 points at the top of the table with the league almost two-thirds through.

Cristiano Ronaldo made Hat trick in Real Madrid's win over Sevilla

Cristiano Ronaldo helped Real Madrid prime their attack for their highly anticipated Champions League clash with Manchester United by scoring his 21st career hat-trick in a 4-1 home win over Sevilla in the Spanish league on Saturday.
After a defensive blunder let Karim Benzema open for Madrid 18 minutes in, Ronaldo unleashed an unstoppable strike to double the advantage in the 26th. The former Manchester star then went on to find the back of the net twice more after halftime.
Ronaldo did his best to make amends for his own goal that cost Madrid a loss at Granada in the last round with his 22nd, 23rd and 24th goals in the league this season. Only Barcelona's Lionel Messi, with 34, has scored more.

Iniesta, Messi made Barcelona to 6-1 win over Getafe

Lionel Messi notched up his 35th league goal of the season as an understrength Barcelona strolled to a crushing 6-1 home win against Getafe that put them 12 points clear at the top of La Liga on Sunday.
Alexis Sanchez and David Villa made the most of a rare place in the starting lineup with goals either side of Messi's strike and Andres Iniesta, Cristian Tello and Gerard Pique were also on the scoresheet as Barca racked up a 20th victory in 23 matches to move on to 62 points.
Atletico Madrid have 50 points in second place ahead of their game at Rayo Vallecano later on Sunday, four ahead of third-placed Real Madrid, who thrashed Sevilla 4-1 at the Bernabeu on Saturday. "We are not going to repeat all the praise we have showered on him (Messi)," said Barca sporting director Andoni Zubizarreta.

Drug cheats should be caught: Rafael Nadal

Rafael Nadal says testing for performance-enhancing drugs in sport should strike a balance between catching the cheats and respecting the athletes.
"Not everyone has to pay for some sinners," Nadal said on Friday at the VTR Open in Chile.
Nadal said earlier this week that he had passed six blood and urine tests since losing on June 28 at Wimbledon - his most recent tournament before the current one in Chile, which is his comeback event after seven months off to recover from a left knee injury. Nadal, an 11-time Grand-Slam winner, said it should be made public who is being tested and how frequently.

Having given Spurs a fifth-minute lead with a dipping free kick, the Wales winger powered through in the 78th to drive home the winning goal and ensure Spurs consolidated their position in the top four.
Bale, one of the Premier League's most exciting talents, has now scored in his last four matches in all competitions and has a career-high 13 in the league this season, almost single-handedly leading Tottenham's charge to a Champions League qualification spot.

World Cup and Champions League matches fixed: European police

A wide-ranging match-fixing investigation has uncovered more than 680 suspicious matches - including World Cup and European Championship qualifiers and two Champions League games - and found evidence that a Singapore-based crime group is closely involved in match-fixing, Europol said Monday. The investigation by Europol, the European Union's joint police body, found 380 suspicious matches in Europe and another 300 questionable games outside the continent, mainly in Africa, Asia, South and Central America.
"This is a sad day for European (soccer)," Rob Wainwright, the head of Europol, told a news conference. He said criminals are cashing in on soccer corruption "on a scale and in a way that threatens the very fabric of the game."
